Nestled in the rolling hills of Bistrița-Năsăud, in the picturesque village of Jelna, Crama Jelna is a family-owned boutique winery driven by a deep passion for wine and viticulture. Founded by a young family of entrepreneurs, the winery is dedicated to reviving and preserving a centuries-old wine tradition that once defined this historic region of Transylvania.
The vineyards of Jelna have been cultivated since ancient times, as confirmed by historical maps dating back several centuries. Even the Josephine Map of 1766, the first detailed cartographic survey of Transylvania by the Austro-Hungarian Empire, highlights extensive vineyards spread across these hills—proof of a rich winemaking heritage that had long been forgotten.
Today, Crama Jelna carefully manages 26 hectares of vineyards, with an average vine age of 5 years. The winery cultivates a refined selection of grape varieties, including Sauvignon Blanc, Fetească Albă, Fetească Regală, Muscat Ottonel, and Pinot Noir, with plans to expand into Fetească Neagră, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Novac, and Negru de Drăgășani.
As a small, artisanal winery in Romania, Crama Jelna produces approximately 80,000 bottles annually, with plans to grow sustainably to 100,000–120,000 bottles as the vines mature.
One of the earliest references to wine in Jelna comes from church records, where it is mentioned that Petrus Murator, the painter believed to have created the famous Navicella fresco, was paid in barrels of wine—highlighting the deep-rooted connection between the local community and winemaking.
Crama Jelna is more than just a vineyard—it is a complete destination for wine tourism in Transylvania, combining vineyard, winery, boutique hotel, SPA, and restaurant into one seamless experience.
