Casa Weiss was built in 1910 by the Bartok family in the main Upper Street house rows of Rimetea village. The walls were made of wooden planks, adobe and straw, and the ceilings were made of planks with adobe and straw. The longitudinal wall behind the building was made of stones of various sizes and adobe. The thermal insulation specific to the times, in the attic, meant the ceiling being loaded with over 30 cm of soil.
Beneath the rooms there were two cellars: the cellar with access from the street and the cellar with access from the last room, used for storing food. On the property, there was also a brick barn, with various rooms used for storing wood, tools, etc. Behind the barn, towards the garden, there was a shelter for animals (pigs, chickens).
In 2023, the house was purchased by a young family, passionate about the picturesque area of Rimetea, with the aim of restoring it and remodel it as a guesthouse with a bistro. The renovation of the building to its current state lasted longer than a year and involved numerous teams of workers, technicians and an architect with experience in the field of restoring old buildings. At the same time, the barn was also renovated and converted into a two-level residential house.
The work began with the unveiling of the adobe walls and ceilings, as well as the emptying of the attic of the stored soil, and the restoration of the roof. The two cellars were united through a laborious and delicate process of sub-construction, resulting in a solid foundation for the house which slowly began to come back to life. The restoration process offered a rich insight into local house building techniques, demonstrating the people’s skill in using any available natural resources to their advantage.
The house was brought back to life by reinforcing the walls and foundation, using thermal and sound insulation with mineral wool, and protecting it against humidity with vapor barriers for passive houses, as well as underfloor heating generated by an energy efficient air-to-air pump. Special attention was paid to doors and windows, which were recreated according to the original design using three glass panes with laminated wood and manually carved details.
This house had lived for many years and its passage through ages was expressed through the arrangement of the rooms. The four accommodation spaces resulting from the restoration represent this journey through time, each room having the specificity of a certain era (1910 – 1950 – 1980 – contemporary), achieved through elements of decoration and furniture. Guests have the option of stepping into the meticulously painted 1950s room, or melancholic can enjoy romances or radio theater on a 1985 pickup player in the 1980s room.
These experiences were intended to be comfortable, even if “traveling” back to 1910, the room whose furniture was handcrafted from thick wooden beams, guests will enjoy a restful sleep. Each accommodation unit has its own bathroom with premium amenities. We hope you will enjoy the Casa Weiss experience and will return for a new adventure!
