Description
The accommodation we offer to our guests is a traditional Romanian household, in a neo-Romanian style, typical to Northern Oltenia and built by POTECARI, who once guarded the border with Transylvania, part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
The household is located on the Road beneath the mountain, the northernmost road in Oltenia and with access to Transalpina, the highest driveway in Romania and one of the highest and most picturesque asphalt road from Europe, also known as the King's Road because it was restored on the initiative of King Carol II, moment captured with enthusiasm in the paintings exhibited in the guestroom.
The paths that start in front of the house and furrow the Parang mountains, marked as bicycle and trekking routes, are just as picturesque.
Traditions are still very much alive here and our guests can meet MONUMENT people, shepherds who still practice transhumance, folk craftsmen including wood carvers, icon painters and sculptors, traditional carpet weavers, folk dancers and singers. And if they choose the right time, our guests can take part in the celebration of these traditions such as The ascent and descent of the sheep from the mountain, the Tocan Festival.
The products we offer to our guests are carefully chosen from traditional local producers, specific to the area, the famous Novaci cheese, wines from the solar vineyards at the foot of the Parang mountains, handmade bread, jams, syrups and canned food carefully prepared by the locals.
Oltenia beneath the mountain is a place of great spirituality and you will find here important monastic centres such as Lainici, Crasna, Icoana, Bistrita, Hurezi, Arnota Monasteries. Nearby there are numerous caves such as Muierii Cave, Polovragi Cave, via ferrata routes (Baia de Fier), Oltetului Gorges, Galbenului Gorges, Ranca resort, Ranca Adventure Park located at the entrance of the resort and in the wintertime you can practise winter sports.
Accommodation
The accommodation consists of 3 different houses:
- The large house - Novac house (two bedrooms with double bed, for 4 people)
- The medium house - Gruia house (two rooms with double bed for 4 people)
- The small house - Hires house (for two people with double bed).
Each house has its own bathroom, a common space quite generous for dining and resting (shed), a fully equipped kitchen, a courtyard and a meadow with hammocks and sunbeds and most of all with a very relaxing view. We have fruit trees and vines from which guests can serve at will.
All rooms are decorated with care and great love with unique pieces of furniture, extremely old and fragile, with also unique carpets, handmade from organic wool dyed with natural pigments by one of the last weavers in the area, so we ask our guests to treat these objects with the same love and care.
Facilities are: barbeque area, wi-free, hair dryer, dishwasher, fully equipped kitchen, heating (wood stoves and electric convectors), free parking, bike rental nearby (300m) and in winter we can offer ski and snowboard lessons on request (the owner is also an instructor).
On demand we can offer breakfast prepared with tasty and fresh local products.

Un loc primitor unde te poti bucura in liniste de natura.
Am revenit a doua oara in acest loc linistit unde te poti relaxa si respira aerul curat de la tara. Camerele sunt curate si gazdele primitoare, iar mancarea gatita acolo, nu ai cum s-o uiti. Sunt multe activitati de facut in zona si e placut sa te intorci pe seara si sa vezi apusul din gradina care se intinde in spatele casei. As reveni cu drag oricand.
Locatie superba ,mare atentie pt toate detaliile la renovarea caselor nu exista obiecte la care sa nu vrei sa le aflii povestea si sa nu-ti capteze atentia
Gazdele extraordinare, in fiecare zi cel putin o surpriza placuta la masa -paine calda,branza locala f buna
Cu toate ca totul aduce sminte de casa bunicii exista tot confortul , curatenia impecabila iar zona(indrumati de gazde) ofera multe locuri de vazut in afara zonelor aglomerate

The traditional Romanian house, with wonderfully restored furniture and a really big garden, big comfy beds and a spacious kitchen, equipped with all the appliances you need, is the perfect place for a peaceful holiday. The beautiful fireplaces added a lot to the comfort of the house, creating a relaxing atmosphere, especially in the nice reading spot, decorated with really comfortable armchairs and a big bookshelf. The food was delicious, cooked by Cosmina herself with a lot of local products and amazing desserts. The hosts were really nice and welcoming, making us feel pampered from the second we got there. The location is also really close to Rânca.
One of the best authenic and traditional accomodation & services weșve ever experienced in Romania.
Since our arrival the host attended of all our needs and made us feel pampered with a worm welcoming, home cooked meals using only local sourced ingredients and ensured we benefit from all the comfort this wonderfull location has to offer. The location is a wonderfuly restored +100year old house with a big garden and vintage furniture / decorations. It felt as we were hosted in a museum :)
We had high expectations from this short holiday near Ranca, and Bogdan & Cosmina managed to exceed them by carefuly looking on every little detail for our staying.
We are looking forward to return and experience the summer facilities such as hammocs and sun beds, an amazing garden with fruit trees and plenty of relaxation.
Authentic place, in very good shape
We saw Potecarii and decided thatșs the place to spend winter holidays with some friends; it proved and excellent choice. The houses are really cute, the old furniture is well restored, but donșt worry about the beds: these are new, as are all appliances, including those in the kitchen. Since the houses were not really designed for tourism, some areas may seem a bit small, but to me this contributes to the authentic feeling. For instance, having more than eight persons around the kitchen table may feel a bit tight, but on the other hand it brings a family feeling to dinner.
We were sleeping in Casa Gruia and spent most of the time in the the bigger Casa Novac, so canșt really tell a lot about the small Casa Hires. All fireplaces were working well and our room was quickly heated - we soon learned how to keep a constant temperature despite having very little experience before our arrival.
The Ranca ski resort is 30 min away and may be OK for beginners, but the experienced skiers should not be carried away. If winter sports are not your thing, the area offers a lot of from a cultural and natural standpoint within a radius of 30 km.
All three units are in the same yard and, when the weather is nice(r), people may gather in the old shed which we did not fully use at the end of December. I believe itșs also possible to have dinner there, in summer. The back yard also promises to be a great place to stay and relax, itșs huge and seemed tempting even in winter.
Food was great, with a few nice surprises for the younger members of the group and I believe everything was produced locally. Weșre already looking forward to coming back in the summer.
Final words about the hosts: they are a really enjoyable couple and have two cute and smart kids. We felt welcome and almost spoiled, as they were very helpful throughout. It shows this is more than business, which is always a winning approach in hospitality.
