Overview

Have you ever wished to travel back in time? If yes, come and join us on a trip in the Land of Moti, right in the heart of the Western Carpathians.

You will be deeply impressed by the tranquil atmosphere and the charming hamlets scattered on the heights or in the valleys. You will meet the Moti, those mountain people, stubborn but warm and welcoming, who’s way of life is a long row of traditions and customs, always glad to invite you at their table and to share with you their stories as old as the mountains.

You will hike in blooming meadows and through deep spruce forests, you will explore wonderful caves and thus you will discover and learn about a fascinating world that is still unchanged.

What you will do

Day 1

Drive to Aries Valley. Stop in Bubesti hamlet, park the cars and start hiking to Pătrăhăițești hamlet. Visit the beautiful Buciniș waterfall, about 20 m high, hidden somewhere in the heart of the forest. Return to the hamlet, stop for rest and lunch at a local family and then continue our way to the car. Drive to Casa de Piatră hamlet. On the way we will stop to visit Tăuz karst spring – an apparently blue-green “lake”, almost still, surrounded by high limestone walls, actually the place where the waters that flew for about 3 km through an underground gallery coming from Coiba Mare Cave burst out. Arrive at the guesthouse in the hamlet. Rest, dinner, discussions about the trip programme for the next day. Overnight at the guesthouse.

Day 2

Breakfast at the guesthouse and then we start hiking through the glades and along the valleys in the area. On return way we will visit Vârtop Ice Cave and Coiba Mare Cave.
Return to the guesthouse for lunch. After a short rest, we pack, get in the cars and return back home.

Included/Excluded

  • Accommodation: 1 night accommodation at a local family’s guesthouse, rooms with 2 and 3 beds, ensuite bathrooms, heating, hot and cold water permanently.
  • Meals: lunch and dinner on day 1, breakfast and lunch on day 2. Meals are cooked from organic ingredients from the family’s household and garden. Vegetarian and vegan food available. Tourists who have allergies are kindly asked to mention this in advance so that this aspect will be taken into consideration during the menu preparation.
  • Guidance and tourist assistance. Certified guide with experience in guided trips in Western Carpathians. Trip preparation and organization.
  • Helmets and front torches, trekking poles.
  • Entrance tickets for Vârtop Ice Cave.
  • Transport (can be provided on demand).
  • Personal foods and drinks, souvenirs.

To whom is this trip addressed?
The trip is addressed to all hiking lovers no matter their experience but in a good health condition. Age range: 5-70 y.o.
In which season is the trip run?
The trip is run from spring to late autumn, practically from the moment the snow is meltdown to the moment of the first snow (late autumn or beginning of winter). The winter version of this trip is on snowshoes.
What is the level of difficulty for this trip?
The level of difficulty is low.
Do I need specific training or gear for visiting the caves?
The Vârtop Ice Cave is a tourist cave that can be visited, by any tourist, in guided groups. There is no need for special training or experience. The necessary gear is formed by helmet and front torch. These are provided by trip organisers. Coiba Mare Cave is a cave with a very large entrance hall that can be visited by any tourist, without guide. Helmet and head torch are recommended. No need for specific training or experience. Practically, we will visit only the entrance hall that has the largest cave entrance in Romania (47 m height, 74 m large).
What do I need to bring with me?
A small rucksack for day trips, (hiking) boots, rain coat or water proof jacket, a warm fleece (for spring or autumn) sun hat, sun glasses, water bottle, optional sweets and/or fruit.
