If you need a break from the city or want to get up close and personal with nature, then a walking tour of Varghis Canyon is perfect for you. A truly hidden and surprising place of Transylvania, the Varghis Canyon is located between the Harghita and Perşani Mountains, part of the Eastern Carpathians mountain range.
Meet your guide in the small village of Meresti, (75 km from Sighisoara, 85 km from Brasov) or in Varghis (68 km from Brasov) and he will drive you on forest roads to the starting point of your fascinating journey. Walk through the 4 km long rock passage and visit some of the 100 caves registered in the protected area of the canyon together with your experienced local guide.
In caves you can meet the biggest bat colony of Eastern Carpathians. As you walk, learn about the canyon’s history and geographical make-up and drink in the untouched scenery. The trail goes along numerous wooden suspension bridges set above the Varghis stream which makes this trip even more exciting and fun, especially for children.
At the end of the trip you can pay a delicious visit to a 100 year old authentic barn turned into an artisan cheese-making workshop in Mereşti village, where you not only taste a rich variety of fragrant home-made cheese, but also learn a few production secrets during the tasting tour.
On request, it may be combined with a bear watching tour near Odorheiu Secuiesc.
